Our Consul General of Canada, Rana Sarkar, will be our special guest and will bring us up to date on important Canadian issues.  Please come, welcome him again, and find out the latest on Canadian happenings and those issues affecting us here in the US.

We are hopeful that some other Consulate staff will also attend.

PROGRAM:

The speaker was John Knox, Executive Director Emeritus, Earth Island Institute (EII). Earth Island was founded in 1982 by legendary environmentalist David Brower. For more than three decades, Earth Island has been the organizational home to more than 200 grassroots environmental action projects and currently has a vibrant network of more than 75 projects.

They provide comprehensive fiscal sponsorship and project support to a vibrant network of activists and social entrepreneurs. In the tradition of their founder David Brower, they recognize and support the next generation of young leaders, and inspire people to get involved and take action.

Their New Leaders Initiative mentors young people and sponsors the annual Brower Youth Awards to recognize tomorrow's environmental leaders. They publish the award-winning Earth Island Journal to inspire and educate, and their new Earth Island Advocates program utilizes legal strategies to stand up for wild places, wildlife, and our hard-won environmental protection laws.

Our speaker was Anne Evers Hitz, a fifth-generation San Franciscan who gathered together images from libraries and private collections to tell the story of San Francisco's Ferry Building.

Our speaker was Jennifer Stojkovic, a Canadian, and the Executive Director of sfciti.org, an organization that connects with San Francisco’s tech leaders, nonprofit organizations, and city policymakers.  sf.citi advocates innovation and collaboration to create meaningful change around pressing issues affecting the San Francisco community.


They represent the tech sector in conversation with city policymakers and engage their member companies around projects that serve the larger San Francisco community.  Most importantly, they take a “One City” approach to everything they do –- building a shared sense of community and civic responsibility between San Francisco’s technology companies and its residents.

Program: Our speaker was Colonel Fred Rutledge, President of the Royal Canadian Legion, San Francisco Branch 25 and a member of the branch for over 35 years.
He is a fourth generation native Californian. He retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 2007 with over 27 years of service and promptly joined the California State Military Reserve and the California Center for Military History.

Program: Speaker was our own member, Dr. Heather Hudson. She gave an illustrated talk about her trip through the Northwest Passage and talked about her work with indigenous people in the Canadian North and Alaska.

PROGRAM:
The speaker was Susan Burnett from CASA, the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association.  Together with its state and local member programs, CASA supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every abused or neglected child in the United States can be safe, have a permanent home and the opportunity to thrive.  Nobody longs for a safe and loving family more than a child in foster care.  Court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are empowered by the courts to help make this dream a reality.

We were entertained by Bonnie Weiss, as seasoned theatre educator, writer, radio & cabaret producer and the Director of CURTAIN UP!, a Musical Theatre Program for Older Adults. Her presentation, "Thanks for the Memories," was about Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and we saw video clips of celebrated songs from productions of Oklahoma!CarouselSouth PacificThe King and I, and The Sound of Music.
